Another day, another spate of internet rumors.
Despite rampant rumors on multiple Web sites, Steve Freeman is still the Permian offensive coordinator and Randy Quisenberry still doesn't have a job.
Speculation persists that Freeman, who resigned his spot as the head football coach at Class 3A Brownwood in December, has been offered the same position at Midland Lee.
Midland ISD athletic director Todd Howefy denied those rumors, though.
"We have not offered the job to anyone," Howey said. "We are not to that point. We haven't even interviewed anyone formally. We want to make sure we run the course and make the process work.
"I've done quite a bit of research on some candidates and will narrow it down in the next couple of days and then do formal interviews."
Howey said there is no timetable for hiring a new coach, though with spring football getting ready to start the district would like to move quickly.
The Midland Lee job came open last week when Quisenberry resigned after being put on paid leave for a situation at the school.
Quisenberry, who has coached at both Odessa schools, has talked with both Odessa High head coach Ron King and Permian head coach Gary Gaines about the possibility of joining one of the staffs.
"I talked to coach King last Friday about a position, but there is nothing solid right now," Quisenberry said. "I called coach Gaines up front, when this first came about, and he said he wished he would've known two weeks ago. Right now there is nothing available (at Permian)."
Quisenberry has expressed a desire to stay in the area and to remain coaching at a high level, which is why so many are convinced Permian would be perfect, especially because his son Zack is on staff with the Panthers.
"With Zack being there that makes it a unique situation," Randy Quisenberry said. "For the last few years, my wife and I were talking about me and Zack coaching together.
"I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If (Freeman) were to get the Lee job and a spot opened up (at Permian) I'd definitely be interested in visiting with Gary."
Ector County ISD athletic director Leon Fuller also said he had no knowledge of any movement amongst the Permian coaching staff.
"I don't know if that is in the mix or not," Fuller said. "The last thing I knew, Freeman was working over at Permian (Tuesday)."
Fuller also said he does not know if Permian assistant football coaches have signed contracts for the 2009-10 school year, yet. Fuller did say the contracts are non-binding and coaches are generally released from them if they want to move on.
