Football: Monahans rumbles past Pecos
Comments 0 | Recommend 0MONAHANS If there was a bright spot for Pecos fans, the game was pretty much over with daylight remaining so they could drive home down Interstate 20 at 80 mph.
Otherwise, it was a long night for the Eagles, who were routed by 57-7 by rival Monahans on homecoming night at Estes Stadium behind 167 rushing yards from Loboes running back Colby Denton.
Denton had most of those yards and all three of his touchdowns in the first half, when Monahans (3-0) jumped out to a 43-7 lead at the break.
Monahans coach Mickey Owens said the team was able to deal with the combination of home-coming week and their rivals from the neighboring county.
“We had a lot of expectations and those kids handled it well,” Owens said.
Monahans quarterback Quincy Titus completed six of seven passes for 139 yards and two touch-down passes. All the Loboes passes came in the first half.
“I told coach we should get out of our game plan and do something different,” Titus said. “The ball started flying and they were catching it. It was a good time for us tonight.”
The win was extra special coming against the Eagles (2-2), Denton said.
“It’s a great feeling on homecoming to see everybody in the crowd,” he said. “Definitely the best feeling you can have.”
After seeing his team outgained by 351 yards, Pecos coach Chris Henson took solace in the likeli-hood that his team won’t face a team as strong as Monahans until deep into the playoffs.
“That’s a great Monahans team,” he said. “They got after us pretty good. They picked up all our defenses. They’re a good ballclub.”
Henson said the Eagles came out a bit flat, possibly a result of their double overtime victory last week.
“We’re gonna get after it in practice,” he said. “We’re a better football team than we showed to-night.”
With San Angelo Lake View, the Loboes’ next opponent defeating their district rival Greenwood tonight, Owens said Monahans will have reason to stay focused in the coming week.
Titus said the coach need not worry about his team being ready for that one.
“If we start getting big headed, that will shut us down,” Titus said. “We’ve just got to take it week by week.”
