Permian has decided to stay in house for its next boys basketball coach.

Darren Allman, the Permian athletics director and football coach, has recommended assistant Danny Wright to replace Shawn Almond, who resigned last month.

“He hasn’t been hired yet, until board approval,” Allman said.

The next board meeting for the Ector County Independent School District is scheduled for July 17.

Wright was a varsity assistant at Permian for the 2006-07 season, and he had been the head football and boys basketball coach at Bonham Junior High for six years. He also has coached AAU teams in the spring and summer.

“I hope they chose me because I am the best guy for the job,” Wright said. “I know the kids and am very familiar with them.”

Almond coached Permian for two seasons before resigning to become an assistant principal at Hood Junior High. He led the Panthers to a 28-29 record.

Wright was selected from a group of applicants that included Fort Stockton coach Joe Flores, Grapevine junior varsity coach Kevin Starnes, Midland’s Larry Pitts and Bastrop’s Russell Frazier.

Permian had nine seniors on the 2006-07 roster.

“We are going to be young, but we have a great group of kids with great attitude,” Wright said, “With those two factors, it will always be fun.”
