Football: Sonora picks Sine as new head coach

Sonora ISD's search for a head football coach and athletics director is nearly over.

Flatonia's David Sine has been offered and accepted the job, and Sonora will have a school board meeting Monday to confirm Sine's hiring.

"It is a great tradition in football and I'm excited about the opportunity," Sine said. "I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. I want to be a part of the entire community. My family is extremely excited about it."

Sine, who is 39 years old, has been head coach in Flatonia the past eight years, compiling a 57-39 record and three playoff appearances. Flatonia reached a Class 1A regional playoff in 2002, and area playoffs in 2004 and 2007.

"It's kind of the same situation I inherited in Flatonia," Sine said. "Flatonia had been down prior to us arriving and we were able to turn that back around. (Sonora) has had a couple of tough years. We want to try and continue the tradition."

The Broncos compete in District 4-2A with Alpine, Crane, Kermit, Ozona and Reagan County. Sonora won a Class 2A Division I state title in 2000.

Sine was one of four finalists who were interviewed for the position, beating out former Ballinger head coach Brent Brevard, Bronte head coach Kevin Burns and Lampasas assistant coach Jimmy Randolph.

Attempts to reach Sonora ISD superintendent Don Gibson were unsuccessful.

"With five state titles, we are going to work and shoot for No. 6," Sine said. "Our overall goal is to win the Lone Star Cup. We want to push all the programs and our goal in Sonora is to take all the programs to the next level."

Sine began his career as a quarterbacks coach in Willis, mentoring Michael Bishop, the 1998 Heisman runner-up for Kansas State. He then went to Conroe Caney Creek for half a season, coaching the secondary, before moving to Flatonia.

He graduated from Southwest Texas State University.

"My wife is originally from Johnson City and I've been hunting outside of Eden for about five years," Sine said. "I enjoy the area. It is a great opportunity for my family and I and we are looking forward to being a Sonora Bronco."
