FOOTBALL: Rankin 60, Garden City 12
RANKIN Not only did the Red Devils lock up a postseason berth with their 60-12 victory Friday over Garden City, but they also eliminated the Bearkats — the two-time defending state champions — from playoff contention.
Rankin, which improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in Six-Man District 7 Division I, will play for the district title Friday when it travels to face Fort Davis.
Much of the credit goes to Rankin junior running back Cory Norwood. He rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.
Norwood opened the scoring with a 56-yard run at 9:08 of the first quarter. He added a 38-yard touchdown run later in the quarter.
His final touchdown came on an 11-yard scamper at 4:17 of the third quarter.
Rankin sophomore Aaron Castillo added a pair of touchdowns, returning a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown and scoring on a 45-yard kickoff return.
Garden City dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in district.
45-point mercy rule ended game with 8:09 to play in the fourth quarter
