Football: Quisenberry out as Midland Lee's head coach

MIDLAND Randy Quisenberry no longer is the head football coach at Midland Lee High School.

Quisenberry has resigned the position and the Midland ISD school board gave permission by a unanimous vote Tuesday for superintendent Sylvester Perez to finalize a separation agreement with the former Rebels leader.

The Midland ISD placed Quisenberry on paid administrative leave March 31 and released a statement saying the coach was under investigation for "unprofessional treatment of students."

A 1975 Permian High School graduate, Quisenberry took over the Midland Lee program in 2004 and led it to the playoffs in all five of his seasons. He went 30-27 during his tenure with the Rebels.

"It was one of those deals we just kind of reached the point - the school district and I - that in the best interest with what's happened and gone on, it was just time to move forward and do what was in the best interest of the program and the kids," Quisenberry said of his resignation. "It's one of those deals, I don't like to do this, I wish I didn't have to, but it's just what had to be done."

Quisenberry's current contract was set to expire in July and he had signed another one-year contract to serve as Lee's head coach through July 2010.

Midland Lee was the third program Quisenberry served as the head coach. After a successful stint as a Permian assistant from 1990-95, he became Odessa High's head coach in 1996 and stayed in the position for three seasons, highlighted by a Class 5A Division I quarterfinal appearance in 1997 and the first OHS victory against Permian since 1964.

Quisenberry left OHS for Abilene Cooper and served in that post from 1999-2003 before replacing John Parchman as the Midland Lee head coach.

With the 2008-09 school year almost over, Quisenberry said the timing of the resignation leaves his future unclear.

"I wish I did - I'd sure feel a lot better if I did know," Quisenberry said. "Obviously, I want to keep coaching. Laura (his wife) and I would love to stay in West Texas, but it's getting to the point almost at the end of April and the first of May, there's not many jobs out there. I guess I'll look until I find something."
