Gymnastics: Panthers cruise to Mojo Invitational title
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Juniors Micah Tripp and Ryan Press were looking to show that this year’s Permian boys gymnastics team is capable of carrying on the tradition created during the past two decades.
During the second day of competition Saturday at the Mojo Invitational, those two — and the rest of the Panthers — began penning their own chapters in the program’s history book.
Tripp won four individual titles and scored 110.80 points to earn his first two-day all-around title and his four teammates all finished in the top eight to help Permian score 324.50 points and outdistance second-place Odessa High by 39 points (285.50).
“It feels good to see the way that we performed as a team,” Tripp said. “Everyone was concentrating on doing their job and it worked out. (Saturday) was tough because it was the first time that we’ve competed on back-to-back days, and we were all a little tired at the beginning. But once the meet started, everyone knew what they had to do.”
El Paso Eastwood was third (271.30), the Permian II team finished fourth (228.39), El Paso Hanks was fifth (125.40), and El Paso Bel Air finished sixth (122.40).
Stephen Nunez of Eastwood was second in the all-around at 104.90 points, but he was followed by three Permian gymnasts. Camryn Hammit (103.95), Matthew Martinez (103.35) and Press (103.10) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Panthers.
Permian freshman Riley Murphy was eighth at 93.05 points.
“It is all a process, and this was one of the steps in that process,” Permian coach Todd Vesely said. “I thought it was a fun competition with some very good teams. This event gives you a chance to find out how the gymnasts are going to respond and who you are as a team. This was a good starting point for us.”
Tripp won individual titles on the pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar. Martinez claimed the floor exercise title.
Chris Berger finished sixth in the all-around with 96.70 points for Odessa High, while teammates Jackie Johnson in seventh (93.95) and Isaiah Joe was ninth (92.35). Joe, a state finalist last year, captured the vaulting crown with the help of a 9.85 marking on Saturday.
“We had a much better day,” Odessa High coach Tony Gonzalez said. “From the beginning of the day, I thought that they were more focused, so I’m very happy with that. Everyone stepped up and we were able to move up from third to second as a team. Now, we just have to work on being more consistent.”
