Volleyball: Monahans sweeps into Class 3A championship match

SAN MARCOS For Monahans junior setter Erin Fisher, her stomach has always been the best gauge of just how big a match is.

Whether it’s a playoff match or the final of a tournament, Fisher has come to expect some jitters.

But something was different about the Lady Loboes’ 25-18, 25-20, 25-10 Class 3A state semifinal victory against Caldwell before 1,174 spectators at Strahan Coliseum.

There was no anxiety.

“This game, I think we all were just ready to play,” Fisher said. “We didn’t have any nerves at all.”

Behind balanced and efficient attacking, tough serving and strong net play, Monahans advanced to state final for the 14th time in school history.

The Lady Loboes, making their 15th appearance at the state tournament, will play defending state champion Lucas Lovejoy — which outlasted Wimberley in five games in Friday’s other semifinals — at 1 p.m. today in the final.

“It’s a great feeling, knowing that all the work we’ve put in, it’s actually has paid off this time,” said Fisher, who had 30 assists and spearheaded an attack that had a .350 hitting percentage. “We’re ready to play (Saturday).”

Monahans (41-5) was definitely ready to play on Friday.

The Lady Loboes used a 7-1 run to overcome a 12-11 deficit in Game 1, taking an 18-13 advantage.

They would never trail again.

“I felt like we were pretty much in control,” said Monahans senior Shelbi Cornelius, who had eight kills, two aces and a .368 hitting percentage. “We had some shaky moments, but we always played together.”

Caldwell (31-13) couldn’t battle through its rough patches.

The Hornets had just 18 kills in 71 swings, committing 14 hitting errors for a .056 hitting clip.

“We just didn’t click,” Caldwell senior Melissa Cumby said. “It just got out of hand. Usually, we can recover, but today we couldn’t.”

Monahans’ balanced attacking and serving had a lot to do with it.

The Lady Loboes had four players with at least seven kills, led by Amy Rose’s 14. Kristi Holly had 12, and Kali Lewis contributed seven.

And while Monahans had just seven aces, its serving was so effective that Caldwell spent most of the match scrambling just to get the ball over the net.

“We knew regardless of what was on the other side (of the court), we still controlled the ball once it crossed that plane,” Monahans coach Patty Dominguez said. “We knew we needed to be aggressive about what we were doing, and go after it.”

That aggressiveness eventually wore down Caldwell, which also lost to Monahans in the 2003 state semifinals.

“I would have preferred our real team showed up,” Caldwell coach Jane Anne Giese said. “(The Lady Loboes) are good, but that wasn’t our team. We were off all day.”
