Football: Friday's District 2-5A preview capsules

MIDLAND LEE AT MIDLAND HIGH

>> Time, Date, Place: 7:30 tonight at Grande Communications Stadium, Midland.

>> Districts: Midland Lee, 2-5A; Midland High 2-5A

>> 2008 Records: Midland Lee, 0-1, 0-0; Midland High, 0-1, 0-0.

>> Last Week: Rockwall beat Midland Lee 15-14; DeSoto beat Midland High 48-28.

>> 2007 Records: Midland Lee 6-6 DI area round, 3-2 3-5A; Midland High 4-6, 1-4 3-5A

>> Last Season: Midland Lee defeated Midland High 35-26.

>> Radio: 550 AM (Midland).

>> Notes: Both teams fell in heartbreaking fashion last week... Midland High scored first, but DeSoto reeled off 48 straight points to put the game out of reach... Midland Lee turned the ball over four times, missed a field goal and missed a key fourth-down conversion against Rockwall... Midland Lee is still rotating Tyler Wilke and Jace Edwards at quarterback, but the Rebels only threw the ball 7 times last week... The Rebels' offense is centered around running back Jarven Roberson, who gained 137 yards last week but fumbled twice... Defensive back Adrian Pertile is a threat both as a receiver and returning kicks... Midland High gave up 447 yards to DeSoto, the most allowed by any defense in District 2-5A... Midland High has its own quarterback competition between Blake Stewart and Jack Bolger... Bolger totaled 166 yards on eight completions against DeSoto, Stewart had 100 yards on seven completions... Running back Darius Miller picked up 53 yards on 14 carries last week.

AMARILLO HIGH AT LUBBOCK CORONADO

>> Time, Date, Place: 8 tonight at Lowrey Field, Lubbock.

>> Districts: Amarillo High, 2-5A; Lubbock Coronado, 2-5A.

>> 2008 Records: Amarillo High 1-0, 0-0; Lubbock Coronado 1-0, 0-0.

>> Last Week: Amarillo High beat Canyon Randall 35-13; Lubbock Coronado beat El Paso Franklin 49-28.

>> 2007 Records: Amarillo High 5-6 DII bi-district finalist, 3-2 2-5A; Lubbock Coronado 11-2, DI regional semifinalist, 5-0 2-5A

>> Last Season: Lubbock Coronado beat Amarillo High 35-21.

>> Radio: KJAK 92.7 (Lubbock).

>> Notes: Sandies running back Thomas Fraser, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2007, exploded out of the gate with a 212-yard rushing performance in the win over Canyon Randall... Quarterback Marcus Stockton added 94 yards on 10 carries, and power back Jacob Burton picked up 55 yards... Amarillo's rushing attack gave the Sandies the No. 1 offensive output in Week Zero with 479 total yards... 382 of those yards came on the ground... Lubbock Coronado wasn't far behind on offense, totaling 474 yards, but the Mustangs picked up their yards through the air... Coronado quarterback Chris Camp racked up 355 yards and three touchdowns in the passing game and added a rushing touchdown... Shaney Wilkinson was the main recipient of Camp's passes, catching 13 passes for 197 yards... The Mustangs did have problems on defense, though, allowing 438 yards of total offense to El Paso Franklin, the second-worst mark in the district in Week 0. 

LUBBOCK MONTEREY AT AMARILLO TASCOSA

>> Time, Date, Place: 7:30 tonight, Dick Bivins Stadium, Amarillo

>> District: Monterey, 2-5A; Tascosa, 2-5A.

>> 2008 Records: Monterey, 1-0; Tascosa, 1-0.

>> 2007 Records: Monterey, 6-6, Division II area finalist; Tascosa, 4-6.

>> Last Season: Lee won, 33-30, in double overtime.

>> Last Week: Monterey def. Plainview, 26-0; Tascosa def. Palo Duro, 21-16.

>> Notes: Monterey had to wait an extra day for its opener because of weather, then went out and shutout Plainview on Saturday afternoon. Junior quarterback Sam Teague rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown in his varsity debut, leading a team-rushing effort of 283 yards. The Plainsmen de-fense also got into the action, holding Plainview to nega-tive yards rushing through three quarters and allowing just 132 total yards on the night ... The Rebels, looking to get back to the playoffs after a year away, got a strong performance from quarterback Dalton Brooks, who finished 14-of-22 for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over Palo Duro. Running back/defensive back Tanner Dennis saved the Rebels on both sides of the ball as he scored a rushing touchdown and then made a tackle and interception with less than five minutes to play to seal the victory.
