Football: Marquez to have surgery

Odessa High running back Bradley Marquez will have surgery Thursday to repair a tendon in his left elbow and likely is done for the 2009 season, Bronchos coach Ron King confirmed Monday.
Marquez, a junior, injured his elbow in the third quarter against Permian on Oct. 2 at Ratliff Sta-dium.
“We were waiting for the results of an MRI and we got them on Thursday and the tendon is torn,” King said. “Now it’s about his long-term health and not about getting him ready to play this season.
“It’s a blow to the offense, as you can imagine, but we have players that need to step up in his place and get the job done.”
Leading the replacements will be running backs Ronnie Marquez and Ivan Subia, who has gained 197 yards in the two games Bradley Marquez has missed.
Marquez was injured when he caught a pass from quarterback Derrick Teegarden and went 33 yards for a touchdown, but had to brace himself with his elbow going into the end zone.
To make matters worse, the play was called back for an ineligible receiver downfield.
Part of a three-headed monster in the backfield with quarterback Derrick Teegarden and running back Ronnie Marquez, Bradley Marquez had rushed for 418 yards and six touchdowns in five games this season. Last season, Marquez set the single-season record with 1,742 yards rushing, with 21 touchdowns.
The news comes as the Bronchos prepare to face Amarillo High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ratliff Sta-dium in a battle for the top spot in Distrcit 2-5A. Last year against the Sandies, Marquez helped OHS gain 700 yards in total offense, another school record.
