Football: Bronchos open district with shutout victory

McQueen hauls in three touchdown catches for OHS

LUBBOCK Happy birthday, Tyler McQueen.

McQueen celebrated his 17th birthday in fine fashion Thursday, catching three touchdown passes to help Odessa High defeat Lubbock High 30-0 in the District 2-5A opener for both teams at Lowrey Field.

The OHS defense also did its part, posting the program's first shutout since 2006 against Abilene Cooper.

"I thought the defense won this ball game for us," OHS coach Ron King said. "We sputtered on offense early and the defense kept giving us great field position and we weren't able to take advantage of it.

"Finally, in the second half, we were able to run the ball a little bit more and drove down the field. Lubbock High is a very good football team and they gave us everything they had."

The Bronchos (2-0 overall, 1-0 district) return to Ratliff Stadium on Sept. 12 to play host to Lubbock Coronado.

McQueen was the favored target of quarterback Derrick Teegarden, catching four passes for 92 yards.

Bradley Marquez, Gabriel Rodriguez and Miles Torres also finished with three catches each as Teegarden went 16-of-27 for 245 yards and four touchdowns. The four TDs ties a single-game school record shared by five others.

Rodriguez had the other touchdown reception.

"What a way to celebrate my birthday," McQueen said outside a raucous OHS locker room. "The trust that this team has is unbelievable. It's so much different than last year.

"Other teams don't know who to cover because everyone can do some many things. It's a great feeling."

Defensive coordinator Mike Munguia was feeling good as well after watching his unit hold the Westerners to minus-4 yards in rushing and just 97 passing for the game.

The Bronchos had two sacks of Lubbock High quarterback Angel Armendariz and harassed him much of the game.

"We knew we had to contain the quarterback and running backs and that's what our defense did," King said. "You have to take your hat off to Coach Munguia and his staff for putting together a great game plan."

Much of the first quarter was a field-position battle as both teams were forced to punt after their first two possessions.

The Westerners (0-2, 0-1) seemed to get the best of the kicking game as twice they pinned the Bronchos inside their own 20-yard-line - at the 5 with 7:11 left to play in the first quarter and then at the 14 with 2:05 remaining in the frame.

Teegarden, however, used his arm to immediately flip the field for OHS after the second Lubbock High kick.

After scrambling for 6 yards and then watching Bradley Marquez get the first down, Teegarden rolled to the right, away from pressure, and found McQueen coming back down the right sideline.

The junior receiver then made several nice moves to shed would-be tacklers and pick up extra blockers before being hauled down 52 yards later at the Lubbock 23. The duo then hooked up two plays later, with McQueen hauling in a 25-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.

The teams then resumed their field-position battle with five more punts and this time the Bronchos came away the victors - and with their second touchdown of the game.

After forcing Lubbock to punt with 4:59 to go before halftime, OHS took over at the Westerners' 35. Bradley Marquez rushed for nine yards on first down, but the Bronchos were called for consecutive penalties that moved the ball back to the Lubbock 31, putting OHS in a first-and-20 situation.

Teegarden made it much more manageable with a 13-yard scramble, and he then hit Torres for a 9-yard gain for a first-and-goal at the 9.

That's when McQueen made a highlight-reel catch in the right corner, reaching up with his left hand to haul in the fade just before stepping out of bounds with 3:30 left in the second quarter.
