FOOTBALL: Fort Davis 38, Garden City 34
FORT DAVIS Freshman receiver Vincent Perez scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Steve Enriquez with 42 seconds to play, lifting Fort Davis to a 38-34 upset of two-time defending state champion Garden City in the District 7-1A Division I Six-Man opener for both teams.
Fort Davis (6-1 overall, 1-0 district) followed up the late touchdown by stopping Garden City (4-4, 0-1) on downs to preserve the upset at Bart Coan Field.
Enriquez completed 16 of 22 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Indians while also rushing for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Francisco Perez caught eight passes for 100 yards and a score while Christopher Stephens caught a touchdown pass from Enriquez with 2:50 to play as the Indians took a 30-28 lead.
Garden City responded quickly and went ahead 34-30 with 1:40 to go before Fort Davis — after Enriquez was sacked on first down — drove down to take its 38-34 lead on Sanchez’s touchdown reception.
The Indians also had a standout defensive game led by 11 tackles from Hunter Hurley and 10 from Carlos Granado.
