On Saturday morning, Porshia Fobbs picked a college.

By the time Saturday evening rolled around, Fobbs had already found a little extra money for her freshman year at Texas-San Antonio.

Fobbs, a two-time state qualifier at Permian, headlined a list of five athletes awarded scholarships Saturday at the 5th annual Dan Cepero Memorial Track and Field Meet.

Four $1,500 scholarships were awarded to Fobbs, Lubbock Coronado graduate Paul Davis and Canyon Randall graduates Casey Felton and Tara Tarrant.

Snyder's Kenneth Turner, a two-time Class 3A state champion, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Sam's Club.

The Cepero meet has traditionally sponsored only two scholarships.

"We're trying to get more money out to more athletes and bring more talented seniors into the meet," said Ralph Cepero, brother to the late Dan Cepero. "Next year we'll probably have even more money from other donors."

Coming into the second day of the Cepero meet, most of the athletes knew where they were headed.

Tarrant will run at West Texas A&M. Felton will become a decathlete at Texas Tech.

Turner will pull double duty at TCU as a cornerback on the football team and a sprinter for the track and field team.

Fobbs was still on the fence.

"Choosing between North Texas and UTSA was really hard," Fobbs said. "But I have a lot of family in San Antonio, and a lot of my friends already go there."

Fobbs competed in four events - the 100-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the 1,600 relay - at the Cepero meet and picked up a gold medal in the hurdles and the relay.

But for Fobbs, this summer track season will help her get ready to compete in college.

"It keeps me in shape," Fobbs said. "I'm not going to go to practice dying."

And now Fobbs knows where she's headed.
