FOOTBALL: Greenwood linebacker Armitage headed to ACU
After helping Greenwood reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008, linebacker Jacob Armitage signed with Abilene Christian University as a preferred walk-on. Armitage said he received scholarship offers from some other schools, but he wanted to be part of one of the best NCAA Division II programs in the country.
“It’s a great opportunity. It’s a great program,” he said. “When I got to visit, I felt really good meeting some of the coaches and players. I felt like it would be a great place to not only play football but go to school.”
Greenwood coach Shad Hanna said the Wildcats were looking for a linebacker who also could drop into pass coverage, and the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Armitage fits that mold. He led the Rangers with four passes defended and also had an interception.
Armitage also led Greenwood with 138 tackles and three forced fumbles, and he tied for the team lead with seven tackles for loss.
“They’ll put some meat on him, put some mass on him, and I think in a couple years he’ll be able to help them out,” Hanna said. “He’s just got to get in there and work hard for them.”
