Football: Alpine 30, Pecos 27

PECOS The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks built a big lead and then held on for dear life Friday for a 30-27 victory against Pecos in the nondistrict season opener for both teams at Rotary Field.

Alpine took a 30-7 lead in the opening minute of the second half when Alfredo Armendariz hauled in an 84-yard touchdown pass from Dominic Scott.

However, Pecos scored the next 20 points on a pair of rushing touchdowns by Ramiro Pinales and another by Omar Medina to pull within 30-27 late in the third quarter.

The Eagles had the ball near Alpine’s goal line with less than 30 seconds left to play but could not score a touchdown and then lost the game when they missed a field goal as time expired.

Scott finished with 304 yards passing and touchdown tosses to Armendariz, Carlos Mendoza and Taylor O’Bryant.

Medina led Pecos with 135 yards rushing and Pinales had 110 yards rushing.
